My agent got the call asking if I wanted to come down and get made up to play a zombie in a webisode for AMC’s Walking Dead directed by Greg Nicotero. I couldn’t say yes to this fast enough. Like I said in my Tweet, I’ve been wanting to do this my whole life. Zombies have always been my favorite genre of horror and to participate in something as killer as Walking Dead would just be amazing.

Truly my Make A Wish moment!

I got to the set and headed straight for the makeup trailer. I was told I was getting the full-on zombie “hero” makeup. That means I get the sick head/neck wounds done with silicone appliques. Garrett Immel was doing my makeup, he’s one of the top dudes doing this on the planet. He explained how there are the main “hero” zombies, then the second tier background zombies which are more just makeup and blood and then there are the third tier background zombies with just makeup and if it’s a night shoot, they wear masks that read well on camera. Makes sense, they couldn’t spend 90 minutes each on 500 people every time there was a zombie crowd scene.

Garrett told me he had my picture for a week so he already knew what he wanted to do to me. I told him to not hold back, make it as brutal as he wants. The whole process was pretty painless, even sitting for 90 minutes was cool because they were putting zombie makeup on me. I would’ve sat for 5 hours, I was so stoked. I’ll post a wide range of pics showing the process from start to finish.

The only weird part was putting in the contacts. I’ve never had contacts in ever, I can barely put drops in my eyes. The lens specialist put me right at ease and directed me each step of the way, “look up, look left, blink” etc and they were in and it was like looking through the eyes of the dead. Well, it was kind of cloudy anyway.(Cont. Scroll down)

Next was making sure I could convincingly walk like a corpse. I just did what felt natural, started with a broken ankle which would cause me to lean, let my arm swing like dead weight, head forward, blackened teeth (Black Tooth!) gnashing. I showed my walk to zombie pro Joe (didn’t get his last name) and he approved. He said I looked dead! No walking notes.

No zombie faux pas (typical rookie mistake would be arms up like Frankenstein). I guess I am just genetically wired to play the undead. My scene was next and Greg gave me my mark and told me what was going to happen. Basically, the lead is coming out of the house with two kids running into the street and they pass right by me. I turn and track them and then shamble off after them. We got to do the take about six times and after each one I was cheering out loud. I wish we could’ve done it 100 times. I was so focused on one of the little kid actors, staring at him and thinking “I am going to eat your fucking head off you little fucker.” I think the kid could feel my malevolence towards him because he kept looking at me nervously and hiding behind his “mom.” Sorry kid, I was into my role!

After I was done (wrapped as they say in the movie biz) Greg told me I did great. That meant a lot considering the movies he’s been a part of, Evil Dead 2 Army Of Darkness, Day Of The Dead, and of course Walking Dead. The man is the best at what he does and I’m just glad I didn’t fuck up his shot.

I kept the makeup on after the shoot and headed home. I got some great looks from people in other cars. I wanted to keep the makeup on all week!

I got home and fed my 8 week old son. His reaction was basically, “yeah, whatever, feed me ugly.”

I followed Garrett’s instructions on how to take the makeup off by getting in a hot shower and scrubbing with some towels until finally an hour later I was dezombified. It was an amazing day and I can only hope I get to do it again and next time get to eat people!!!

Kirkman Teases Season 2 to USA Weekend; Lincoln Talks Rick’s Dilemma With Wired

USA Weekend gets Season 2 tidbits from Robert Kirkman this week, while Andrew Lincoln talks apocalyptic morals with Wired and Hollywood.com nominates The Walking Dead and Laurie Holden for their “Alterna-Emmys.”

Robert Kirkman tells USA Weekend that Season 2 is “going to be much more rural and much more dangerous.”

Wired talks to Andrew Lincoln about Rick’s moral dilemma: “Do you survive at all costs and lose your humanity because it’s the only way to do it, or is humanity — does it have to exist because otherwise you may as well just blow your brains out?”

Hollywood.com chooses The Walking Dead (“an innovative, outstanding adaptation”) and Laurie Holden (“a monument to dramatic acting”) for its “Alterna-Emmys.”

Lauren Cohan will play Maggie Green in Season 2 of The Walking Dead

…If her new (The) Walking Dead gig follows the trajectory of the graphic novels from which the AMC series is based, Lauren may have found a job with stability — her Maggie Greene is among Farmer Hershel’s fortunate few children who survive the zombie plague.

“If Maggie’s entrance is anything to go by, we have a lot to look forward to” when Season 2 begins in October, says Lauren, calling from the Georgia set. “She wears jeans, kick-ass boots and rides a horse. She’s very steely and views Glenn [Steven Yuen] as a leader and the cutest of the bunch.”

An old Victorian farmhouse is being used as the Hershels’ ravaged sanctuary. “When you walk in, you get a sense of the happy family memories that were there,” Lauren says, “and the desperation of how they live now.”

The First Day of Filming Season 2 The Walking Dead:

The Walking Dead – Frank Darabont Talks ‘Michonne’ & Master Horror Scribe, Stephen King [SPOILERS]

Q: Michonne is one of the most popular characters in the comic. Will she be joining the show?
Frank Darabont: I can officially tell you Michonne is coming in the third season.

Q: Are you eyeing anyone to play her right now?
Frank Darabont: No. That’s later.

Q: Will Stephen King and Joe Hill still co-write a season 2 episode?
Frank Darabont: I’m keeping my fingers crossed. It’s just a matter of… They want to do it together. I’m proud to say that they’re both addicted fans of the show. In fact, Steve started harassing me by email, because I sent him the first one as soon as we had a lab pressing a disc. Like a decent Blu-ray. Then he started harassing me for the next one. Because Joe would drive up from wherever he lives, because he lives an hour away, and they’d sit and watch it together. [Laughs.] He’d say, “C’mon, where’s the next one?” “It’s in the lab, Steve. We’re still mixing the sound. I’ll get it to you. I promise.”

Q: Have they discussed possible scenarios for their episode with you?
Frank Darabont: No, we haven’t yet. We’ve literally just been waiting for their schedules, given that they’re pretty in-demand guys. Both of them. We’ve just been waiting for their schedules to mesh. For them to both be free at the same time. That’s the only thing that’s stopping it from happening. It’ll happen eventually, I’m sure.

Robert Kirkman on How Having Kids Changed How He Writes The Walking Dead:

Q:You’re a father now; has becoming a parent affected your writing at all?
Kirkman: Yes, but not in the way you would think. With The Walking Dead in particular, when I had a child, I did the same thing every human being does when they have kids, I think. They go into that mode where realistic human violence is a little more unnerving for them, especially anything involving kids. My wife and I used to love watching violent movies together and then, after we had kids, it’s this whole thing where you think “Now I understand the affection that you have for a kid, and this is somebody’s child in this ridiculous Rambo movie.” You tend to want to avoid violence.
And what that has made me do is, anytime I’m writing The Walking Dead, and I come up with a violent scene or a big event that’s pretty gruesome, I’ll sometimes think “Is this too much?” and then I’ll go “Don’t puss out, Kirkman! Just because you’re a parent doesn’t mean you have to change this. You would have done this before you had kids. You don’t want The Walking Dead to be different because you have kids.” And so I do it. Whereas, before I had kids, I might have talked myself out of it. I might have been like “Maybe this is a little too intense.” Now, I’m like “You’re only thinking this because you have kids, do it anyway.” I feel like The Walking Dead has become more violent because I have kids.

Finally, we’ve gotten a few more decent photos from the set of The Walking Dead –besides of course the 2 awesome zombie shots released by zombie makeup effects master, Greg Nicotero.

On Set - Annoyed 'The Walking Dead' 'zombie' (walker or biter)

We have one of the most amusing photos that I’ve seen this week–a group of bored, overheated-looking (but NOT restless) zombies standing around, waiting! One ‘walker’ in particular looks really annoyed (probably with the person who shot the photo as the guy, in full zombie makeup, is looking straight into the camera).

Jon Bernthal - The Waking Dead - Season 2 'Shane Walsh' Survived to S2!!! Credit: AMC (Don't know who actually shot them--they are uncredited all over the 'net.)

The coolest shot  is of one of male leads of this edgy zombie-fest both shooting a scene and getting hydrated.

Jon Bernthal who plays Shane Walsh, a character whose script will be wholly different from the source material as at this point in The Walking Dead comics he is dead, is featured in several of these shots, and I must say he is in fine form.
