No longer (if she in fact ever did) ‘belonging to the 90′s, Lucy Lawless as ‘Lucretia’ of Spartacus on STARZ sadly is no more. But sudden culmination of the role of ‘Lucretia’ on Spartacus: Vengeance happened within weeks of Lawless’ equality newsworthy (as in real news) role as a Greenpeace ‘eco-warrior.’

On the second-season finale of Starz’s “Spartacus: Vengeance,” several key characters died, including Mira, Ashur, Glaber and Oenomaus.

I saw Mira‘s (Katrina Law) death as a given as soon as Spartacus broke up with her.

For audience wish-fulfillment and the logic of the story, Ashur (Nick Tarabay) had to go, too. It served the purpose of moving Naevia‘s story to some kind of resolution, too. Important as a goodly chunk of screentime was given over to telling her story.

"Lucretia' & 'Ashur' - Spartacus: Vengeance (STARZ))

I started watching because of Lucy and I stayed because of her and some really great co-starring characters like Ilithyia played by Viva Bianca (dead: “Vengeance”) & Jaimie Murray (dead, Gods of the Arena -prequel) and especially spouse ‘Batiatus’ John Hanna (dead, end of Season 1) were pretty much always awesome.
Oneomaus (Peter Mensah) gone, Lucretia, Illithyia and Ashur (Nick Tarabay)–the fun is gone for me.

“But none might have been as surprising as Lucretia.

Lucretia drops off a cliff with Ilithyia newborn "unwrapped' and in her arms

Played by original cast member Lucy Lawless , Lucretia took a suicidal header off a cliff while holding (Illithia &) Spartacus’ newborn son.

While viewers at home might have been shocked, one person wasn’t: Lawless, who knew going into the season that her character was fated to perish.

She is, after all, married to series executive producer Rob Tapert.

“There are very few upsides to being married to a producer, let me tell you, but knowing where your character is going is one of them,” Lawless told the Herald earlier this week in a telephone call from Auckland, New Zealand.’

“I had to know. Everything I had played all season had to lead to this.”

The second episode, in which she sacrificed a goat and believed a prophecy that she would be delivering a child to her dead husband, set in motion all her subsequent actions.

As for taking Ilithyia’s (Viva Bianca ) baby, Lucretia “felt like it was her baby — she engineered it (she brought Spartacus and Ilithyia together in season one). Ilithyia was the incubator for the child, and when she delivered it, she was done with her.”

Lawless defends her character:

“She started out as a very relatable human being. She didn’t want to throw those nasty parties, but her husband wanted them and she wanted to please him. It was a slow transmogrification, but she was corrupted, absolutely, and her husband’s death was such a loss for Lucretia.”

Lawless plans to return to the States soon for some meetings to figure out her next project.

Lucy Lawless as 'Xena: Warrior Princess'

“I’m just so grateful to have had the opportunity here. It really helped bring me back. People can write you off after a show like ‘Xena (Warrior Princess),’ saying, ‘She belongs to the ’90s.’ This really got me out there, and I’ve grown so much and I’m extremely grateful for this platform role.”

But has “Spartacus” made a mistake in sending Lucretia to her doom? How juicy could the story be with Lucretia off raising Spartacus’ son in Rome?

“It would be funny if, after all that work, Lucretia’s gown caught on a tree and she was left screaming four feet off the ground, so furious it hadn’t worked,” Lawless said, then laughing.

Lucy Lawless breaks out the ‘Xena’ battle cry during protest VIDEO:

I daresay that Lawless lost none of her killer instinct moving from ‘Xena’ to ‘Lucretia’  –   Lucy Lawless as Lucretia with only 2 more murders to commit before going over the cliff!

We love Lucy Lawless as Lucretia in “Spartacus: Vengeance” with all of our hearts, but that is hardly news. We’ve loved her since her epic run in “Xena: Warrior Princess.” Gosh, we miss that show. We spoke to Lawless back at the Winter Press Tour and mentioned how much people would love to see a movie version of the show. She told us that she was happy moving forward and expected that they’d cast someone like Megan Fox now. (No!) She also said that she loved playing that role.

Well, during a protest over an oil tanker in New Zealand, Lawless strapped herself to the top of the ship and broke out the Xena battle cry, according to TMZ. Lawless has been tweeting her stance, saying, “I’m on one of the oldest drill rigs on the planet and it’s heading to the Arctic. Tell Shell to stop #savetheartic http://greenpeace.org/savethearctic” and “Oil Scientists say they do not have the technology to clean up an oilspill in the Arctic. #savethearctic”

Hear Lucy in action below. As she told the site, “We know we’re going to be arrested … but … this is a moral decision for us.” Lucy Lawless, Warrior Princess!

It’s seems that Lucretia has been on an interesting trajectory in the six weeks or so since the slaughter of the slave revolt in her home,’the House of Batiatus.’ It’s pretty apparent that she received medical attention for the surprise ‘C-section’ that Crixus performed by shoving his blade into her pregnant abdomen–but who assisted her? For a long time, I’d assumed that the house healer survived and found her and treated her, but after rewatching Spartacus: Blood and Sand‘s finale, I’m wondering if it was not Ashur who negotiated her survival. In the carnage were the elite of Capua decked out in their best finery and jewels. Certainly, Ashur would have helped himself to some of the riches and afterward, the way to take leave of the Bat-House was to walk right by (almost over) the sprawled-on-the-floor/in the pool Lucretia. Ashur is all about securing his place and by helping her he could only help himself. It makes sense logically; the House of Batiatus was finally being good to him; he had no axe to grind with a dying Lucretia. So that’s my guess. Has the answer been disclosed elsewhere? What do you think? How did Lucretia survive what was meant to be a fatal blow by the sword of Crixus? Who did such a nice, neat job of sewing Lucretia up?

Now that she’s been discovered, Lucretia, who Lucy Lawless regards as having ‘lost her marbles,’ seems to be on the brink of another big change in her life. Always sharp and conniving, Lucretia, who seems totally ‘out of it’, has already been privy to talk about her usefulness. Now she needs to take the ball and run with it. Where there is power or a way to snatch back some of the power ripped from her, you can bet that Lucetia will be right on it. No doubt fun times are ahead for Lucy Lawless/Lucretia fans!
