Kirkman Talks About How ‘Shane’ is Changing The Walking Dead:

As fans of The Walking Dead comic series know, Shane (Jon Bernthal) has out-survived his comic counterpart by far. His survival has altered the direction of the Dead mythos from the comics and shaped the AMC series into something comic creator Robert Kirkman calls creatively fun for him.

“From the comic book standpoint, he’s living on borrowed time, but the beauty of the show is that we can change things up,” Kirkman tells us.

In the comics, Shane met his maker in Issue #6, before the survivors made it to the Greene farm. His presence on the farm in the television series lead to the early demise of farmhand Otis (Pruitt Taylor Vince), who survived much longer in the graphic novels. “The storyline with Otis and all of the different things that are happening on the farm because of Shane’s presence are a pretty clear indication that this guy is a pretty good catalyst for story,” Kirkman says. “Watching him change how the stories were told in the comic book is a lot of fun for me.”

ROBERT KIRKMAN: Exactly, right? It’s unfortunate that it was just a vision, a hallucination of some sort. But having him back in the show was an absolute delight. Hopefully it will happen again at some point soon.

I love the way you say “hopefully” as if this has nothing to do with you.

ROBERT KIRKMAN: [Laughs] I’m trying to be coy! My favorite thing was that we hadn’t ever seen those characters interact. I guess we still technically haven’t. But this is the first time Rooker and Reedus have been in a scene together, which is really cool.

Did you know Rooker has his own gun range?

ROBERT KIRKMAN: I would not doubt it.

There’s actually some impressive YouTube footage of him shooting a human tooth out of a zombie target.

ROBERT KIRKMAN: I wouldn’t be surprised to find out that Rooker has his own private island where he hunts human beings. All I’m saying is that Rooker might be the most interesting man in the world.
