The shows aims to portray a period in American history, beginning in January 1920, which was Prohibition with the realities of how people “coped” with alcohol being outlawed. Guys like Al Capone and “Lucky” Luciano were not much more than kids then, albeit criminal kids and they had their hands in the Prohibition till from the get-go. Actor Steve Buscemi, whose intonations were the reason I actually looked up and watched the first Boardwalk Empire commercial a couple of months ago, plays the crooked mayor of Atlantic City who with the advent of Prohibition and the intensity of the criminal element surrounding it, struggles to find his place in transitioning from merely a crook to a full-blown gangster.

Finally, I enjoyed hundreds of comic books–both DC and Marvel as a kid. Since they can inspire films and television shows how are they different than graphic novels? Is it just the format, not substance necessarily? I always got the impression that comic books were somehow a “lower form” of graphic novels, not that I felt one way or the other having not been of the generation that seemed to bring about a resurgence of the graphic novel.

By the time episode 6.14 is over a number of your favourite Island LOSTies will have… well, there’s no way to put this other than bluntly. They’ll be dead. But do not despair because their other selves will probably be pretty much OK in the “sideways world” which by now, hopefully you’ve started to care for them in.

It hasn’t yet worked for me. The characters look like our LOSTies but they are NOT them. It was shocking for example, when Desmond in the “sideways world” (Henry Ian Cusick) ran down substitute teacher John Locke (Terry O’Quinn) in his wheelchair but the impact (no pun) was blunted since the audience knows that is was not John Locke. John Locke is dead. We’ve been told that many times over as well as shown that waxy looking “corpse” both in and out of it’s coffin far too many times. But hey! No worries. No one needs to stay dead in LOST!

This simply removes the genuine shock and most importantly, the sadness that a viewer would feel when a favourite character dies.
