The shows aims to portray a period in American history, beginning in January 1920, which was Prohibition with the realities of how people “coped” with alcohol being outlawed. Guys like Al Capone and “Lucky” Luciano were not much more than kids then, albeit criminal kids and they had their hands in the Prohibition till from the get-go. Actor Steve Buscemi, whose intonations were the reason I actually looked up and watched the first Boardwalk Empire commercial a couple of months ago, plays the crooked mayor of Atlantic City who with the advent of Prohibition and the intensity of the criminal element surrounding it, struggles to find his place in transitioning from merely a crook to a full-blown gangster.
