“TERMINATOR: THE SARAH CONNOR CHRONICLES” The Connors find themselves on high alert and in odd company after their house is robbed. Elsewhere, one Terminator terrorizes Ellison, while another gets dangerously close to John Connor. Meanwhile, Derek and Jesse continue to get reacquainted in the “Brothers of Nablus” episode of TERMINATOR: THE SARAH CONNOR CHRONICLES airing Monday, Nov. 3 (8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX.
I think this was my favourite episode this season. Derek and his future-past babe, Jesse’s relationship which felt somewhat contrived before seemed a little more natural, John Connor’s assertion that he is able to think for himself was more convincing, and James (formerly Agent) Ellison had a very fun scene (for the audience to witness), especially when my favorite male Terminator, Cromartie showed up and literally ripped the heart out of Ellison’s Terminator twin.
The premise of the show was rather simple–the Connor’s home had been burglarized. Of course, immediately they went in to fight mode though they quickly realized that the home had a typical robbery rather than a Terminator stalking them. As the episode progressed, we got to see a little bit of Riley and John together as well as Riley standing up to Cromartie–despite the fact that she had no idea what kind of danger she was in. Cool scene, just the same. Even Shirley Manson as the intimidating T-1001, Catherine Weaver, is starting to come across as believable. I think, on reflection it was a stroke of genius to have her in the last episode be shown how to be more human towards Savannah, her “daughter.” It’s playing well especially now that she’s interacting more outside of the office. I may have to revisit my initial judgment that Shirley Manson was a bad casting choice. Lena Heady as Sarah Connor also seemed better utilized in this eppy. What else can I say– she’s gorgeous to look at and fun to watch in action, and they gave her plenty of action. They gave her interaction, too. Yay!
Except for one single moment that fell flat for me “Brothers of Nablus” was an almost great episode.
Upon reflection I wish now that they the left that final scene out with Thomas Dekker as John Connor speaking to his mother about allowing him to kill Sarkassian in response to Sarah’s assertion that she was here to protect them. He questioned her mother about “how” she was protecting him then– when she “allowed” him to kill Sarkassian. It sounded like a typical teenage parent-can’t-win statement, and in that respect it played well, but it just fell flat for me. Why? Because at this point John should know what their life is about and death is certainly a big part of their lives in the need to kill or be killed. So that’s my only quibble-which is not a lot. Other than that I thought this episode was pretty awesome. I’ll give it a solid B+.
