Are you wondering what that gibberish voice on the phone said to Kate when it’s played in reverse?“The island needs you. You have to go back before it’s too late.” Don’t forget the photos need to be clicked to be enlarged. Enjoy! On The Freighter: Desmond, Jin, and Michael fervently try to prevent an intricately wired bomb from going off by freezing it with liquid nitrogen. The explosives were confirmed to be linked to a “dead man’s switch” strapped to Keamy’s arm. If his heart stopped beating the bomb would explode.4finale-00641.jpgbomb.4finale-0072.jpg4finale-0074.jpgDesmond, who had some basic training in bomb detonation during his stint in the army, explains that no matter what they do the end result will be BOOM! Richard Alpert and his pack of brown-clad Others (why? why do the Others keep changing back and forth between brown ratty clothes–wouldn’t green ratty clothes be better camo in the jungle???) ambushed Keamy’s men and freed Ben, their “fallen from Jacob’s grace” leader. There were more whispers just before the Others attacked. Honestly, I hope the whispers turn out to be something really cool, but I fear there will be a lame explanation.Bad-assery: Sayid and Kate Style~Task: Save Ben, save yourself.setting up keamykeamy itchy trigger fingerkate pulls one over on keamyhis people are chasing meKeamy kicks an errant grenade over to one of his fellow mercenaries blowing him up.benkeamy itchy trigger fingerkeamy kicks grenade at his own guy, omaromar goes BOOMRun!run kate run4finale-0125.jpgmaking a deal to save benBen falls down…Ooof!Sayid and Keamy duke it out4x1300062.jpg4finale-0130.jpg

“LEADERSHIP STUFF” (Hurley)

Meanwhile back at the Orchid Station: Jack and Locke met in the ruins of the old Dharma greenhouse to discuss ”leadership stuff,” as Hurley put it. Man of Faith vs. Man of Science: still no change.

Sawyer and Hurley enjoy some 15 y.o. saltine crackers whilst waiting for Jack and Locke to finish butting heads.

r’oh, r’oh

Someone intrudes upon the convo in which Locke tells Jack that that he was going to have to lie about the existence of the Island and the remaining castaways, saying, ‘If you do it [lie to the world] half as well as you lie to yourself, they’ll believe you.” … Locke predicts this will shatter Jack, emotionally. He must have the seen the prequels like we did.

Jack would love to shoot Ben..but he can’t because Locke and Ben need to save the island.

Bye, Jack. See ‘ya in another lifetime, brother.

Walt is rumoured to be playing a big part next season. Frankly after all this time, I’m pretty “meh” about the whole idea, unless ultimately it results in a father-child reunion which both the show-runner and Harold Perrineau have pretty well nixed (Harold is pissed, feels short-changed, and discriminated against as a black man).

So Walt visits Hurley in the insane asylum three years after Hurley comes back (or NOW) and wants to know why he (Walt) has been left out of the loop (Everyone is lying about what happened).

4finale-0161.jpg 4finale-0167.jpg

Hurley whispers that it’s to protect everyone left on the Island ; Walt says,”Like my Dad?” Hurley lies and says “Yeah.”

Miles eats peanuts4finale-0278.jpg4finale-0279.jpg4finale-0280.jpg

Miles confronts Charlotte that she’s been to the Island before.

When Charlotte plays dumb and asks Miles what he meant, he gives her an all-knowing “I-may-just-be-jacking-you-around-look saying,” ”Yes…what do I mean?”

Due to the 2008 Writer’s Guild strike, much of what would have been done with the Freighter people got shelved. Hard to know how they are going to pick up this thread in Season Five. I would totally dig seeing more easy-to-hate-but-truly funny psychic Miles Straume. Hurley’s gone: We need some comic relief on the island! And the island is rife with dead people! I have a bad gut feeling that my other fave, Doc Dan Faraday, who was last seen on a tiny raft with a handful of red-shirts, has been seen for the last time or his time is v. short though he should stay, he may be part of a solution, if allowed.

4finale-0282.jpg4finale-0287.jpg4finale-0379.jpg4finale-0380.jpg4finale-0381.jpg4finale-0382.jpg4finale-0383.jpg4finale-0384.jpg

Charlotte spoke to Dan, explaining why she refused to leave the Island as she wanted to find out about her “sort of” place of birth.

4finale-0385.jpgDoctor Dan knows a lot more than he’s telling…

C’mon showrunners, give all three actors a chance to shine–that’s why you hired them, isn’t it?! :)

All red shirts are on the raft except Doc Dan. Juliet stays behind “until everyone is off the island.”

Juliet thanks the Doc for all his help. He is very obviously distressed and not telling her something about both the Island and the Freighter. He’s probably wishing that he knew how to contact his “constant,” Desmond right about now.

I have no self control. I’m heading downstairs to watch Battlestar Galactica instead of going to bed. I hated that it was off for two weeks and I’m really hating that it’s the last season and I’m depressed because work is way down and TypePad which I’ve always loved is FUBAR and unlike their usual MO they are taking a good long damn time fixing the issue. Six Apart, please don’t make me regret all the praise I’ve heaped on you over the years. I will feel much more kindly towards you if you fix the problem with my “Starry Night Blue” page displaying when I use the background that I loved instead of this poor substitute. I changed everything in my sidebar to coordinate with that background and it just sucks that you can’t/won’t fix whatever broke on your end.

BSG always cheers me up even at it’s most dark. It’s simply the best teevee show evar!

Three Days~

Posted by: Maple    in Chicago, family, photo

What to do with them?

From what I can gather many people are not venturing far as it is a party holiday that’s coming about as early as it comes–ever. Some folks don’t even celebrate unless you call gardening or DIY “celebrating.”

Spouse has to go to work 2 of the three days so bummer for him that the third day, which he has off will probably be a mix of heavy clouds and thunderstorms, pretty much all day.

I’m thinking mini golf in Hoffman Estates on Saturday, extra early evening–after spouse is off work but before dinner which I’ll treat for. Saturday day and evening look to be the best for the three day Memorial Day holiday here in the States.

These are the potted pansies as good as their as going to look; they are right next to my favourite spot to semi-sunbathe–just 2/3 of my legs with the rest of me shaded by the screen that’s in the back of the photo. We have about 3-foot tall, really leafy bushes framing the deck with just enough space to slip through. For a condo it’s pretty enclosed outdoors. I loves it! lolPansies at their peak~

I have my coffee there and read the morning paper, twice again this week–with skipping a third really nice day to work. I cannot complain about the overall weather but I have way more flexibility than many people. And I sort of work all the time so enforced “breaks” are a good thing.

What’s your favorite midnight snack?

   Posted by: Maple    in Uncategorized

A cup of Earl Grey tea and reduced sodium Wheat Thins. I try to make it just the tea which I take plain ‘cos I like the taste of the tea.

I don’t know if tea drinkers in other parts of the world do this but my Canadian parents started giving me tea as a child. I’d drink a half glass of milk and then my dad would offer to add tea to the other half. It was good! Probably would taste wretched to me now,

though.

Fourteen Years

Posted by: Maple    in The Love You Make, family

All day today, I’ve had a nagging feeling that there was some “occasion” this month of May that I was forgetting. I did a mental check and Mother’s Day popped into my mind. I scratched that. I remembered that May 10 was the anniversary of my first marriage (it was also Mother’s Day that year) but that rang no bells–as it shouldn’t. The date May 20th, popped into my mind briefly but just as quickly was dismissed with a shrug. Nope. I didn’t know until spouse came home and opened a greeting card from his mom–my mother-in-law–that tomorrow, May 20th, is the 14th anniversary of our getting hitched.

It goes without saying that I forget many dates of anniversaries of birthdays, especially.

Some dates that I never forget however are both my kid’s birthdays and my Mom’s birthday. Dad would get thrown into the mix but he’s not ever seemed to enjoy celebrations and his birthday is right near Father’s Day and coincidentally also in the vicinity of my spouse’s birthday, too. Too many dates to remember in June. Lots of birthdays in the extended family too, as well as 8th grade and high school graduations.

So happy anniversary, dear. You are a good spouse. I was just thinking that. You do all the cooking and you work too much and you’ve spent countless hours working with our son on his ballista project for the Gifted Children’s Expo.

You are not really the romantic type (nor am I) so I’ll close using an unfussy statement. I think I got it right this time. Happy Anniversary. I love you.

I have an honor roll student at Fremd High School…

Posted by: Maple    in family, photo

…and I proudly display that fact in bumper sticker form in the place where I spend the most time.

As my son has gone through the grammar school years, I’d see this sticker all around town all the time, mostly stuck to large SUV’s and pricey cars.

I have yet to see a car that a bumper sticker enhanced the appearance of, unless the car is a beater and the bumper sticker is covering up something, so I’ve known for a while that when this bumper sticker arrived it would not be going on my car. My car is as my eldest son describes, my “third child”–a Mustang GT convertible–so no choice even in taping it to the back window, discretely in the corner.

I’ve kept the bumper sticker kind of wedged between things but viewable for over a year but finally whilst dusting (!), I hit upon the notion of why not have it where I’ll see it all the time?
And so here it is:
I have an honor student

I love you, Chris.
Good Luck on those finals!

The State Of Things In The Courtyard

Posted by: Maple    in photography, weather

toomuchsunnotreenosahde.jpg

I’m afraid things are not great across the way. A shady tree that filtered the sunlight for the courtyard’s southern exposure was removed after it died but nothing replaced it. Now the tulips are faring poorly. The too-cold weather is not helping either and the hostas are taking a beating. Compare them to our four varieties of hostas in the semi-shade. (below)

Did you know that there are hundreds of varieties of hostas and they are named sort of like show dogs only with flower-science sounding names? Too much info?

Our hostas do not like the cold any more than than the poor tulips but they are faring better with the shade of the crab apple tree.

Picture time!

Hosta variety

Hostas variety in back of house~ 05.16.08, all the way in back, not looking so good are Obdulatta Hostas, in the very front middle, Patriot, extreme rgt. middle is a Halcion, near rgt. and mid-left are Loyalist Hostas.

Tulips drying up
Poor, struggling neighbour’s/courtyard tulips and over-sunned hostas, with Pechysandra groundcover in back I feel badly every time I look across from my deck to the other side of the courtyard between our and the next building. :(

Erik Reichenbach: Dumbest Survivor Evar!

It seems the boy who lives in the town next to Hell, Michigan will go down in Survivor history as the “Dumbest Player Ever” after working for Individual Immunity and then being conned by the women that him giving the Immunity necklace to Natalie would be “a show of good faith”(!) He did and then they promptly turned around and voted his ass off. This was by far the best Tribal I’ve ever seen with everyone in the jury and the women next to him either laughing out loud at his folly or barely stifling their guffaws at the sight of such an enormous gaffe.challenge

CBS.com summary excerpt~ (below)
…After having forged and broken alliances with every girl on the beach, Erik saved himself from their fury by winning Immunity and earning himself a guaranteed spot in the Final Four. But Cirie came up with the hare-brained scheme to convince Erik to save Natalie from the vote by giving her his Immunity Necklace and proving his loyalty to Cirie. At that point, the three of them, Erik, Natalie and Cirie would vote out Amanda. In reality, the second Erik gave up the Immunity Necklace, the four women in the Dabu tribe would vote him out of the game. Natalie put the plan into action and the unsuspecting Erik started to seriously consider giving up his necklace for the chance to take out Amanda and earn favor with the jury by his generous act of selflessness.immunity challenge

The Final Five:

(L to R) Parvati, Erik, Amanda, Natalie, Cirie

At Tribal Council, Amanda and Parvati blasted Erik in front of the jury, telling everyone how he had switched sides and made different alliances with each of the girls. This was the last straw for Erik. Wanting to earn the respect of the jury, Erik gave Natalie his Immunity Necklace and the girls immediately voted him out four votes to one. As Erik left, Jeff Probst told the tribe, “I think that is what you call a life lesson.” Erik Reichenbach, the 22-year-old Ice Cream Scooper from Hell, Michigan, left behind his final words: “Damn, Damn! They got me. I should have known better. Those damn girls. I mean, there’s one thing to be said about surviving the elements and there’s another thing to be said about surviving four crazy, sexy women. I never thought I would be shoulder to shoulder with all these people that I’ve seen on TV. These are my heroes, and they’re talking to me, they acknowledge me as a person. This whole experience is indescribable.”

My favourite
Post Secret postcard this week~ Special “purge your bad-Mom,”/ bad karma edition.

Warning: Post Secret can be angsty; this week it’s extra angsty.

There were a number of really interesting and provocative cards just in time for Mother’s Day-(every year–pub. on Sundays)!

In this postcard, I especially like the sentiment expressed as, “How much time does forgiveness take?”

Such a good question! Hard to answer.

Cheers!

Mother’s Day Musings Redux

Posted by: Maple    in Internet, The Love You Make, me

Crabapple tree, back of house

Crabapple tree, back of house

Just checked my gmail–there are 200 emails I need to attend to. Probably 20 I can delete right away–the rest are real.

I’m really happy that I sent out the virtual Mother’s Day cards as some of the recipients were really touched. I tried to pick the themes that best suited each woman, then wrote a short note inside. It only took me couple of hours to do them all and the good feelings they generated have convinced me to do it again next year.

That’s the warm and fuzzy reason. The second reason is that it only makes sense because I customize and print up all my own greeting cards that the many moms I am friends with via the Internet would be shown a lil’ love, too. Don’t you agree?

And the best reason of all. Other than the energy used to run my computer for a couple of hours, there was no wear and tear on the environment.

Note to self for next year: Unlike the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, the United Kingdom does not celebrate Mother’s Day on the second Sunday in May. A big d’oh to me!
