I was thumbing through a copy of Rolling Stone Magazine the other day, one of the last days of my son’s high school break. I’m way behind and since this was a special issue, I’d sat it aside and finally decided I’d best make time to check it out thoroughly and anyway, I’m doing a sort of after-holidays clean up-cum-purge. Issue #1000 is a series of essays on people formerly on the cover w/that cover shot reproduced (the criteria for a cover shot varies with “well-known” probably being the most consistent attribute of the people on the 1000 covers).

So. I went to put the Special Collector’s Issue #1000 from June 2006 (!) that I’d just finished reading an essay on Johnny Depp and after, Hunter S. Thompson and a few others, and was about to start Bono by Bono when out slipped what I thought was a thick insert and most likely have been thinking was an insert since I began owning Issue 1000 over 18 months ago. So I swooped down to pick up the insert and in doing so glanced at it and saw:

RScover

“Aha! This is no ordinary ginormous insert!,” I thought.

And the “special foldout” was glued shut!

LOL. Rolling Stone Magazine was acting parental or their age–same thing.

<side note: Tonight (recorded last night) RS sent a real doofus-sounding guy to represent them on the currently- unscripted Jon Stewart Show a/k/a The Daily Show.>

My first thought after seeing words like “skin” and “naked” was because they’d made such a big deal out of this “nude section” and because I’ve seen some truly Playboyesque Rolling Stone covers over the years, was I glad I found this, not my 15-year-old son. (I’m an idiot, I know. Please don’t spoil my delusion(s). After I opened the insert I was surprised at how tame the photos were.

So this is what was inside. No nude Johnny Depp. Boo. Though a very nice quote from the photographer who did the 2005 head-and-shoulders cover photo: “Depp is a great beauty. He does everything he can to break that beauty down a little bit. But everything he does just makes him more interesting-looking.”~Albert Watson

So, I ask, Why no semi-nude Johnny? Hrmph!

Of the guys…I really loved how Brad looked here in his Gweneth/Legends Of The Fall period. Of course, he’s making a 12 Monkeys face  The photo of Justin Timberlake is famous for good reason. It’s near perfect. It made him into an Adonis because the brilliant (now deceased) Herb Ritts took it. As far as his career went it was the beginning of his leaving boy bandage behind him and bringing sexy back.

Of the ladies? Jen’s showing of ass-crack got her a lot of attention…but I think I’m going to go with the under boobage and Cindy Crawford. On the full-size cover she was really beautiful. Striking even. They air-brushed the hell out of Christina–she didn’t even look real and Demi to me, always looks plastic. If you click and enlarge it you can see Uma in her glory but I liked her Kill Bill w/ Tarantino RS cover better. That was luscious. Half of it, anyway.

Depp cover as mentioned above:

And to be fair to Uma:

Will vs. Arnie

Posted by: Maple    in humour, quotes

Will Smith’s new flick “I Am Legend” made $137 million in two weeks at the box office. I caught it. Will Smith does a good job of being the last crazy on Earth, and seeing New York absolutely empty and grown-over is kind of wonderful. But the creatures look very CGI.

Anyway, did you know Arnold Schwarzenegger was supposed to play Will’s role some years ago? it’s true! The script for “I Am Legend” was reportedly floating around for umpteen years. Governor of California Arnie was up for the role, but ended up passing to do “Last Action Hero”.

My theory is that all of Scottish cuisine is based on a dare.

A thinker sees his own actions as experiments and questions–as attempts to find out something. Success and failure are for him answers above all.

Humor is always based on a modicum of truth. Have you ever heard a joke about a father-in-law?

“It is simply necessary to love…”

Hey People!

Winter

I imagine most of you are too busy to have noticed my absence the last few days.

It really comes down to the fact that I’m stubborn as hell and won’t give up on something I want ‘till I’m thoroughly exhausted or every option known to humankind is.

The “something” to which I refer is switching my domain host—again, redirecting my domain name—again, and setting up from scratch my website—again.

I’ve done all this in order to not be a slave to my provider—sort of spreading my assets around, as it were.

I’ve not ever tried using WordPress.org and opposed to WordPress.com—very different and guess who didn’t know that until “too late?” I know bugger-all about the type of coding you need to construct a WordPress blog: c-Panel, file manager, directories, uploading and unzipping—all the unpleasantness that I’ve avoided for the decade I’ve been online. All of it has come to this—three days of trying again, getting stymied, doing searches for assistance, thinking I had the answer, finding out that I don’t, starting over and over and over. Yes, I could have paid for help. I would have done that at approximately the same time hell froze over.

What a craptastic time it’s been.

So now that I’m ready to post, I find our Interwebs have been stricken by the Comcastic virus. Best case is back up tonight. Meantime we have Denzel’s Déjà Vu to enjoy. Toodles!

Reach

Posted by: Maple    in The Love You Make, widgets

I’m  having a bugger of a time.

I want to add social booking marking widgets or better, an-all-in-one widget to my WordPress and I’ve looked and looked and I’m still ultimately at square one. Boo.

I feel like an ass. I’ve known forever that glancing knowledge of CSS was going to get to be mandatory minimum but I happily let TypePad do the heavy lifting for me.

Not so easy here. I didn’t think it would be but I was was hoping it wouldn’t be so hard.

“Night” (Live, Today Show)Radio Nowhere performed for the Today Show (below)Link to official Radio Nowhere video.

I’m burning myself out on the Magic, Bruce and the E Street Band’s (latest) CD/download (whatever I don’t care. I have good seats to see him and the Band in April! Got tickets at face value (plus horrendous handling charges). Very happy still. Excited. Thrilled actually. Even got an E-Street tee-shirt for my birthday.

Yay! Found another, better video of Radio Nowhere performed for the Today Show. Excellent early-morning, unforgiving lights. We never see Patti w/out large dark sunglasses and no close-ups on the face. It’s all red hair and sunglasses from the neck up. I would do the same in any bright light.

Anyway, they were great! So we have besides Bruce, Steve Van Zant (Sil from The Sopranos) only he’s ditched his pompadour for a purple do-rag. And the drummer from Conan (Max Weinburg) and Clarence Clemmons. Aw. I love that saxman. And don’t forget Nils Lofgren. :) And Patti, The Woman Who Waited For Bruce For 8 Years (and finally got her man after her man finally came to his senses). Isn’t love grandNot forgetting keyboardist Roy Bittan, who left this tour for treatment of “melanoma.” It isn’t E Street w/out them all. Plus, like the rest of the guys Roy Bittan is well worth wanting to see. Get Well Soon, Roy!

The Love You Make

John Lennon

John Lennon ~ Murdered at 40 on December 8, 1980

This blog’s name, The Love You Make is from a Beatles song–The End, last line– though it seems to my dismay, that it was a McCartney song w/little input from Lennon. I’d chosen it about 7-8 years ago too with “theloveumakeatmycableprovider.net” for my email addy (now not used).

John Lennon was killed about a week after my 21st birthday–which sort of took the wind of that milestone.

The line “And, in the end the love you take is equal to the love you make” is essentially the Beatles closing statement. It is the last lyric on the last album they recorded. Let It Be was the last album they released, but it was recorded earlier. This contains the only drum solo Ringo ever performed. He hates solos and had to be persuaded to do it. Lennon, McCartney and Harrison took turns doing guitar solos. Each had a distinctive style which McCartney felt reflected their personalities. “Love You” is repeated 24 times. This starts over the end of “Carry That Weight.” It is the last song in a suite at the end of Abbey Road. This ends with a 30-piece orchestra.

Hey! It worked.

Posted by: Maple    in The Love You Make, photo

Holy SmokeHey! It worked. I am happy, happy, happy!

I know I’m a bit behind the learning curve but I’m also not trained in any of this and just cobbling together what I can from where I can.

Though I’ve found some excellent resources, I’ve found way more bullshite than I could ever not wish for.

Honestly, it’s gets discouraging. I guess by “it” I mean people.

For example, I had to delete a comment I was going to leave on the blog of this person whose judgment I have respected until today when she posted a tribute to Ike Turner–who I knew enough about to wish him a happy stay in the depths of hell. I don’t care if he put out the “first” rock n’ roll record in 1951. He was a bully and a serial abuser of women and a hardcore drug addict who served quite a bit of time in the slammer. Fuck him. Let him rot. There I said it. I feel better now.
